Laura Trainini, flutist. I began my musical studies as a child in Italy, attending the Conservatories of Brescia, Venice, and Trento, studying under the guidance of Giampaolo Pretto, the principal flutist of the RAI Orchestra in Turin. Other influential teachers included Michele Marasco, Gabriele Betti, Andrea Oliva for the flute, and Alberto Negroni and Luca Vignali for chamber music. I further refined my skills through participation in numerous masterclasses with Janos Balint, Julien Baudiment, Josè Castellon, Mario Caroli, and continued my studies in the doctoral program at UBC Vancouver with Brenda Fedoruk and Christie Reside.

My career has evolved in the fields of concert performance, teaching, and musical research. I primarily focused my performance activities in Mexico, China and Italy, serving as the principal flutist in the Chihuahua State Orchestra, Toluca Philharmonic Orchestra, and Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra for more than a decade. This experience provided me with extensive leadership and chamber music expertise.

On the educational front, I have accumulated 14 years of music instruction experience, teaching over 200 students across five languages, including English, Chinese, Italian, Spanish, and French. My teaching philosophy blends contemporary teaching strategies with the solid foundation acquired through extensive classical training. I tailor my lessons to each student’s individual needs, taking into account their cultural background. As part of a project in collaboration with the Chan Centre, aimed at audience development and music education, I designed the first music camp for UBC Summer Camps in the summer of 2023.

Currently a DMA candidate at UBC Vancouver, I am in the final stage of my dissertation writing, focusing on embodied techniques in flute practice and performance. I have been invited to present the results of my research at prestigious congresses and venues, including “Creativity in Music and the Arts” (GAPS2 – Global Arts and Psychology Seminar) in York, Graz, La Plata, and Melbourne (14-16 September 2023), the Annual ANDA Conference in Modena, Conservatorio di Musica “Orazio Vecchi – Antonio Tonelli” (29 September – 1 October 2023), and the “Doctors in Performance” Festival conference at the Royal Academy of Music, London (30 August – 1 September 2023).

I currently hold the position of flute teacher under Italian Ministry of Education.
